New project awarded: Submariners’ Stories

We’re extremely proud that Meeja has been awarded the Oral History project, Submariners’ Stories by the Gosport High Street HAZ (HSHAZ).

We’ll be working with the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, the National Museum of the Royal Navy and the Gosport HSHAZ to mark Gosport’s important link with Submariners.

To help ensure we have the widest possible range of roles across Submariners, we’re really pleased to have the active support of the Submariners’ Association, specifically its Gosport branch – the largest in the country.

What’s involved?
At its core it really means us sitting down with Submariners and interviewing them about their lives. These recordings are then gathered together with the others that take part.

We then edit short 1-2 minute sections of them speaking (we call them snippets) that illustrate the themes. We’ve found that this is a great way for those interested to gain an easy way to understand how fascinating the full length Oral Histories can be.

Exhibition in 2022
We’re also commissioning a professional photographer to shoot portraits of those who take part. These will be included with all of the other gathered material to form a public exhibition in Gosport later in the year.

The project is really about helping the Submariners tell their stories and leaving a legacy for their own families, the wider public and those yet to come.

Website example
Using words to describe this only gets us so far. It’s far better to have a look at the kind of Website we’ll produce. Farming Memories (link) is a good example – please feel free to have a click around and explore the various sections.
